FUAM Photobook Workshop #6
Alex Bocchetto / AKINA BOOKS
THE PHOTOBOOK PROCESS: from idea to maquette to marketing.
23-29 January 2017
Guest Tutor: Valentina Abenavoli
Deadline: 30 December 2016
Every photobook is a self-contained universe with its own set of rules -editing, sequencing, design and choice of materials are all opportunities to add new layers of meaning to a body of work. The aim of this 7 days crash course is to build a book dummy, coveringand understanding all the steps of the process through knowledge, creativity and chance.
Creativity is improved by limitation: production doesn’t always need to be expensive and funding doesn’t need to come only through personal means.
How to translate a body of work in book form according to intentions? The workshop will mix an intensive hand-on approach along with the explanation of the whole production process and lectures about the various aspects of the photobook: how to read it, how is made, how to understand and evaluate its editing, choosing the right format, finding the right audience. During the workshop editing and storytelling techniques, production, funding options and marketing strategies will be discussed. At the end of the workshop every student will have produced a maquette from their own project and laid the foundation for the work to come.
The workshop is open to photographers and image makers who are close to complete their project and want to start working toward publication.
